Rising Above: How Project Aarohan is Crafting Futures and Empowering Communities

Gujarat, Ahmedabad 07th January 2025: In the heart of India’s rural landscape, where tradition meets resilience, a quiet revolution is underway. Project Aarohan, a beacon of empowerment, is transforming lives by nurturing local talent and enabling communities to dream beyond boundaries. The project is supported by TATA Power and is being implemented by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad. The area of implementationis thebackwardregions of Mundra and Mandvi block of Kutch.

Project Aarohan’s approach is holistic, combining skill training with practical exposure. The Entrepreneurship Awareness Programmes (EAPs) have sensitised 275 individuals, instilling an entrepreneurial mindset. Meanwhile, 196 beneficiaries have enhanced their expertise through Micro-Skillpreneurship Development Programmes (MSDPs) in advanced fishing techniques, value-added products, and handicrafts.

The project’s unique methodology includes industrial visits, networking opportunities, and hands-on training in advanced techniques like value-added product creation, emphasizing sustainable practices and market engagement through exhibitions in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad. By focusing on green practices and utilising local resources, Aarohan ensures that enterprises are not just sustainable but also echo the principles of “Vocal for Local.”

“At its core, Project Aarohan is more than just an initiative; it is a movement that inspires hope. TATA Power has been thoughtful about combining skill development and knowledge on enterprise creation, in building aplatform for artisans, farmers, and fisherfolk to showcase their potential. The project’s ethos is deeply aligned with the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ fostering self-reliance and sustainability in every aspect it weaves.”  said Dr. Raman Gujral, Professor & Director- Dept. of Projects- Corporate, EDII.

A first-generation entrepreneur from MotiKhakhar village, HeerabenDevadhbhaiGadhvi embodies the power of determination and hard work. With the help of Project Aarohan, she founded Shivay Handwork, a collective enterprise employing 16 women. MSDP helped Heeraben develop her brand and also equipped her with essential marketing skills to sustain her business.

Her first exhibition in Mumbai was not just a milestone but a celebration of her journey—a moment when her handcrafted products found appreciation far from her village. More than just a company, Shivay Handwork is a symbol of what women can accomplish with the correct resources and encouragement, according to Heeraben.

Under Project Aarohan, over 190 women artisans are scaling new heights, supported to expand their businesses and refine their crafts. Six new community-led enterprises have been established, and five innovative handicraft products have been developed with expert guidance, demonstrating the project’s commitment to quality and innovation.

This transformation is not fleeting—it is built for the long term. A Common Facility Centre is in the pipeline to provide continuous handholding to these enterprises, ensuring they thrive in competitive markets.

The Aarohan Project continues to impact lives and is an example of what can be achieved when communities are given the opportunity to thrive—not just empowering individuals but creating a ripple effect that uplifts entire families, communities, industries and economies. This project is a movement of hope, resilience, and possibility for building a future where every dream has the chance to flourish.
