Drishti Foundation Trust Advocates Integrated, Science-Based Approach to Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development.

Drishti Foundation Trust has reiterated the need for an integrated, science-based and partnership-driven approach to addressing India’s growing environmental and developmental challenges. The Trust emphasised that environmental conservation must move beyond isolated interventions and evolve into a broader ecological framework that connects biodiversity, water security, river restoration, disaster resilience, traditional knowledge, scientific research, urban development and community participation.

 

The perspective was reinforced during an important meeting between Dinesh Kumar Gautam, Founder, Drishti Foundation Trust, and Mr. V. Nandkumar, Income Tax Commissioner (Exemptions), Gujarat, Daman and Diu. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the role of civil society organisations and institutions in responding to India’s environmental and developmental priorities.

 

A central theme emerging from the discussion was that India’s long-term development is closely linked with the health and resilience of its ecological systems. The Trust emphasised that environmental challenges cannot be addressed through individual interventions alone. Instead, they require coordinated action involving government institutions, civil society organisations, industry, academic institutions, technical experts, communities and young people.

 

Drishti Foundation Trust highlighted the importance of strengthening the approach to disaster management by moving from conventional disaster relief towards disaster resilience. While immediate relief remains essential during emergencies, long-term resilience requires stronger ecosystems, better preparedness, community capacity, scientific planning and sustainable infrastructure.

 

The discussion also highlighted the need to recognise rivers as living ecological systems, rather than viewing them only as channels for water management or urban development. River rejuvenation, according to the Trust, must consider ecological health, biodiversity, water quality, surrounding habitats, community participation and long-term monitoring.

 

Marine conservation was also discussed as part of a larger environmental framework. The Trust emphasised that marine ecosystems cannot be protected independently of land-based environmental management. Activities affecting rivers, wetlands, coastal areas and terrestrial ecosystems ultimately influence marine environments. An integrated approach is therefore necessary to address ecological pressures across connected landscapes and watersheds.

 

Another important area of discussion was water conservation and traditional water knowledge. Drishti Foundation Trust believes that modern scientific approaches should be complemented by India’s traditional systems of water management. Historical structures such as stepwells, Bavlis and other traditional water systems represent important elements of India’s ecological and cultural heritage. Their restoration can potentially contribute not only to heritage conservation but also to contemporary water security when undertaken through scientifically appropriate planning.

 

The Trust further stressed that ecological restoration and urban development should give greater importance to indigenous plant species. While technologies such as the Miyawaki method can support urban greening when appropriately designed, plantation strategies must be based on local ecological conditions, species suitability, biodiversity considerations, soil characteristics, water availability and long-term maintenance requirements.

 

Drishti Foundation Trust also advocated for scientifically planned urban tree censuses and biodiversity databases. Cities need reliable information about their trees, vegetation, habitats and biodiversity assets to make informed planning decisions. Mapping and continuous monitoring of forests and ecologically important locations can further strengthen conservation planning and enable institutions to assess ecological changes over time.

 

The discussion placed particular emphasis on the role of young people. India possesses a large pool of young minds who can contribute significantly to environmental research, innovation, technology development and community-based conservation. The Trust believes that young people should be encouraged not merely to participate in environmental campaigns, but also to develop as environmental researchers, innovators and community leaders.

 

The role of the private sector was also identified as an important component of the environmental movement. Drishti Foundation Trust believes that corporate participation should extend beyond financial contributions under Corporate Social Responsibility programmes. Industry can contribute technical expertise, technology, human resources, institutional knowledge and professional capabilities to environmental and developmental initiatives.

 

The Trust emphasised that meaningful environmental conservation cannot be created by one organisation, one government department or one sector working independently. It requires partnerships in which each stakeholder contributes its specific strengths. NGOs can connect communities with institutions and facilitate field-level implementation. Government institutions can provide policy and institutional support. Universities can contribute research, technical knowledge and young talent. Industry can provide resources, technology and expertise, while communities can contribute local knowledge and long-term stewardship.

 

According to Drishti Foundation Trust, the larger objective should not simply be to plant more trees, clean more rivers or restore more traditional water structures. The broader challenge is to develop an ecological culture in which development decisions recognise the intrinsic and practical value of biodiversity, forests, rivers, wetlands, water resources and traditional environmental knowledge.

 

India has an extraordinary ecological heritage as well as an enormous human resource of young people. Connecting these two strengths through scientific research, community participation, responsible industry engagement and institutional collaboration can help create a distinctive and locally relevant model of sustainable development.

The Trust further noted that India’s traditional ecological knowledge and modern scientific capabilities should not be viewed as opposing approaches. The relationship between a traditional stepwell and a modern smart city, an indigenous tree and an urban forest, a river and a research laboratory, a community volunteer and a corporate expert, or a young student and an experienced environmentalist can form part of a larger movement towards ecological security.

 

Dinesh Kumar Gautam, Founder, Drishti Foundation Trust, stated that the responsibility of the present generation is to ensure that future generations inherit not merely infrastructure and economic assets, but also healthy rivers, functioning wetlands, thriving forests, diverse ecosystems, clean water and a society that understands its dependence on nature.

 

He emphasised that the journey from traditional water wisdom to modern biodiversity conservation should not be considered a journey backwards. Rather, it represents an opportunity to build a more balanced and resilient future by combining knowledge from the past with contemporary science, technology and institutional capabilities.

 

Drishti Foundation Trust believes that the immediate priority is to transform environmental ideas into practical action, action into measurable outcomes, and successful outcomes into replicable models. The Trust remains committed to working with government institutions, industry leaders, academic institutions, technical experts, communities and young people to contribute to this wider national effort.

 

The Trust reiterated that environmental conservation is not only about protecting nature. It is about protecting the ecological foundations upon which human civilisation and sustainable development depend.
